California lawmakers have rejected a bill seeking to ban plastic shopping bags after a contentious debate over whether the state was going too far in trying to regulate personal choice.
The Democratic bill, which failed late Tuesday, had been the subject of a furious lobbying campaign by the plastic bag manufacturing industry,…
Furious lobbying campaign? By whose definition?
Supporters of the California bill said the 19 billion plastic bags state residents use every year harm the environment and cost the state $25 million annually to collect and transport to landfills.

Single-use? I didn’t know that those plastic grocery bags were single use. Oh my! I must not have gotten the memo on that. I reuse them as garbage bags, laundry bags, and at times soft-sided luggage. I have seen many people use them as doggy poop bags.
Stores would have been required to provide free bags to shoppers who rely on government assistance.
Can’t ask for ID papers, but could ask for government assistance papers.
A state law that took effect in 2007 already requires supermarkets and other large retailers to provide plastic bag recycling bins.
I bring my bags to the recycling container at my grocery store. I think more people should also.
The bill’s main opponent, the Virginia-based American Chemistry Council… The organization represents plastic bag manufacturers such as Dow Chemical Co. and ExxonMobil Corp.
EVIL OIL and CHEMICAL companies! How dare they make and sell products that people need, want and find useful!
