I’ve always said that liberals in government and society create problems in order to create a need and opening for government to step in and solve that problem. President Johnson and Senator Ted Kennedy broke the American healthcare delivery system and now Democrats claim we need Obamacare in order to fix it.
Liberals on local school boards and in teacher unions did away with recess at most schools and are still outlawing childhood games such as tag, duck-duck-goose and red rover-red rover send little Johnny right over, and then claim our kids are ADD/ADHD and need drugs to calm them down.
Now, after doing away with normal elementary school recess and games, artificially increasing the number of children on government provided breakfast and lunches through government programs, and so much more liberals claim our kids are fat – obese even and “they” need to step in and do something. In fact, not just our kids are obese but the parents are obese as well. Why, there is an absolute obesity epidemic in America and we all know our federal government needs to step in when there’s an epidemic – right?
There are just a couple of problems here.
The government changed the way it determines how people are fat or obese in 1998 and the new method does not differentiate between fatty tissue or muscle tissue. Here is a story from CNN dated June 17, 1998:
Who’s fat? New definition adopted
June 17, 1998
WASHINGTON (CNN) — Millions of Americans became “fat” Wednesday — even if they didn’t gain a pound — as the federal government adopted a controversial method for determining who is considered overweight.
The strict guidelines, revealed earlier this month and formally approved by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), measure a person’s Body Mass Index.
The guidelines are based on Body Mass Index (BMI), a height-to-weight formula that ignores whether the weight is from fat or muscle. It also ignores whether someone has a large or small frame. The weights are the same for men and women.
Now, why does that matter? According to Answers.yahoo.com, weightlifting-award winning bodybuilders are obese by government standards:
Shorter BB athletes, think Franco Columbo, Lee Labrada, Shawn Ray, these guys are in the [sic] competive weight range of 185 – 200 pounds, at height around 5′ 03 – 5′ 06″.
If we calculate the BMI for a professional weightlifter/bodybuilder 5’5” tall and 185lbs we get a BMI of 30.8 – obese according to the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute. How many Special Forces soldiers, Marines, etc are obese by the deceptive government standards compared to their actual physical fitness?
Here is a little information from Healthland.time.com concerning recess in our public schools:
When it comes to mandatory recess, five states were ranked weak, and 39 had no recess law. Just 19% of school districts required daily recess, 17% required some recess but less than 20 minutes a day and a full 64% had no recess policy at all. That makes for a lot of antsy kids.
What’s more, researchers found a significant either-or effect: schools that met the recess standards were less likely to meet the P.E. guidelines, and vice versa.
Perhaps it’s not surprising that so few schools are embracing the exercise guidelines. There are only so many hours in the school day, and budget cuts and increased testing pressure means most schools decide that physical activity isn’t critical.
But Sandy Slater, an assistant professor of health policy and administration at the University of Illinois at Chicago, says that’s a mistake. Other studies have identified a link between increased physical activity and academic achievement. “Increasing the amount of physical activity that kids have during the day is not necessarily going to hurt overall academic achievement,” says Slater.
In an accompanying editorial, Dr. Kristine Madsen of the University of California, San Francisco, provocatively suggests that “lack of physical activity may be a far greater public health problem than obesity.”
The problem removing recess isn’t just obesity according to the deceptive government obesity standards, as I said earlier, but it also leads to the bogus diagnosis of ADD/ADHD. It’s difficult for kids to sit still for very long and we’re making them do just that all day in school with no recess. So, Little Johnny and Little Suzie start tapping their toes with pent-up energy and stop paying attention to the teacher – daydreaming about – you guessed it – playing.
People also lament that kids are in their houses on their Play Stations and computers all the time and don’t go outside and play anymore. Well, maybe if we encouraged social interaction between the kids outside and taught them the entertainment value of such childhood games as tag, a tisket-a-tasket a green and yellow basket; duck-duck-goose, Red Rover and so many more they’d actually know how to, and like, playing outside with other kids as well as other valuable lessons. They’d also learn to handle controversy, winning and losing.
In reality, we need to give childhood back to the kids and stop demanding they be adults or adult-like while in elementary school.
But, liberals in our society have created ADD/ADHD, childhood disciplinary problems and an artificial obesity epidemic in order to justify government social engineering. We need to wake the hell up and take action – now!
