I, too, knew John Raven personally. He and I went to and graduated from USAF technical school before transferring to Kunsan in 1989, our first duty assignment. I was in Kunsan when John was TDY at Clark AB, and then I received the tragic news. I was in shock for a few days and numbed the pain by tying a good one on with the local hillbilly and some white lightning he brewed in his dorm room. Tragic is too light a term. I have lived with John’s memory ever since then and see him clear as day every Veteran’s Day and Memorial Day, as though he were sitting next to me. Tears well up in my eyes at the thought of his life cut tragically short.

If anyone else has read this blog and commented as I have, please contact me. If you live anywhere near Brevard County, Florida, I say a Korea Reunion is in order. It’s been, what, 23 years since then? Hard to fathom. I was changed on many deep levels because of my service time, but none so deep as the loss of my good friend, John Raven. May he rest in peace and may his parents be comforted knowing he was an honorable and humble man. I pray for his parents each year.

I knew John Raven personally, he and I arrived at Kunsan AB on the same day. I was horrified at the news and horrified to see him on the front page of the Stars and Stripes Newspaper afterward. I think of him often and wish his family and James Green’s all my prayers.

I’m sorry you consider this a “Personal Failure” of your own, when that distinction obviously belongs to so many others. It is a shame when the government puts so much money, time and energy into ensuring we are properly trained, then wasting it on poor decision making and/or just following policy.

As a Veteran I fully understand the risks that you and your fellow colleague would have been taking, if you had risked leaking information like that to the press. It wouldn’t have just been loosing a choice assignment.

I personally Thank You, for your dedication to the country and those men. I also wish you continued success in all of your endeavors.

I also want to say a special prayer to the parents of those men. I lost my only son 8 years ago and it’s the worst pain a parent can ever bear.
